Tutor Phil Bradley lives in NW Cumbria where he grows his own sustainable willow for basket-making, garden structures and also bird sculptures, all popular workshop topics. He has created some amazing structures and sculptures at RHS Harlow Carr and also takes commissions. www.philbradley.net
Phil's teaching style is relaxed and gentle, yet effective, so everyone achieves the necessary skills to complete the workshop task, be it a useful piece of willow weaving, basketry or merely decorative.
For 2019 Phil will be teaching Willow Curlews again, a popular course he introduced in 2016. It is planned for June when we hope our local curlews will still be around for us to hear their evocative call.
There are two other one day courses, Willow Hares in May and Willow Seed Pods (a new one for us) in July.
There are also a couple of 2 day basket making courses, one for willow frame baskets and the other English roundwork baskets.
The two-day basket making workshop will take place in a stunning open-plan barn with lovely views of Whernside. Phil will guide the group through all the processes to make sure that everyone masters the essential skills of traditional basket making. It is a very satisfying process and you will make one large basket to take home at the end of day two.
The organic willow is included in the price of the workshops and all the tools required will be provided but please bring your own secateurs if you prefer.
The price includes all refreshments, a good lunch and home-baking.
If you need overnight accommodation for any of these courses we can offer special rates in the Bunkbarn - please enquire.
On his own plot Phil has enlisted the help of friendly hens that clean up the weeds from the willow beds.
